How do I cite a source?

Answer

Although there are thousands of different citation styles, there are three commonly used citation styles in academia: Modern Language Association (MLA), American Psychological Association (APA), and Chicago Manual of Style (Chicago).

If you are completing an assignment, your professor will usually put the required citation style in the syllabus or in the assignment directions. If you are writing to publish, you should check to see what citation style is used by your discipline and/or check with the journals you would like to publish in to see what citation style they require.

You can find detailed information about MLA, APA, and Chicago on our Cite Your Sources guide. Just click on the tab of the citation you need to use.
